Meopham allotments - open day - dig for victory 10th May 2020 12 - 3pm
This year we will be joining in the village wide celebration/commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day to raise money for SSAFA – the Armed Forces Charity.
Allotments and back gardens were very important during the war years to keep everyone fed. Rationing made life difficult so many people tried to grow something to help feed their families. I have found researching extremely interesting.
At the moment we are having a beer tent (including wine and cider), refreshments 1940’s street party style (courtesy of Marguerite Patten’s Victory Cookbook), cake and plant sales and a tombola.
One of our plot holders will bring her chickens which is also truly authentic – to this day, plot holders have a right to keep chickens and rabbits at allotments sites according to the 1950 Allotments Act. The British Hen Welfare Trust will also be attending with some chickens. Come along and cuddle a chicken!! We don’t recommend keeping them at the site as the water is turned off in October and they will need fresh water all year round, but you can if you want.
